Messing about on the river – York Marina Boat Hire

On Sunday we hired a boat from York Marina boat hire and spent the afternoon messing about on the river. It was an absolutely brilliant day together as a family and we made some truly fabulous memories as we sailed up and down the river Ouse.

We arrived at the marina at 12:30 and had our life jackets fitted before my Dad was taken down to the boat for a quick safety briefing and to make sure he wasn’t going to cause total havoc on the river.  I think they must have had a heads up from someone.

Whilst he was doing that we all went into the cafe for a toilet stop as the boat doesn’t have a loo.  If you ever do hire a boat I highly recommend this, especially if you have small people.  I ended up desperately needing a wee with nowhere to stop and Luca may have had to do a little tinkle over the side of the boat.

Once the safety briefing was over we could all jump aboard.

From the side of the marina the boat looks tiny compared to some of the private boats moored there but once we were up close we were all very impressed.  In fact it did feel a little bit too flash for all of us, but we did go prepared and were soon making ourselves at home.

The seated areas were all extremely comfortable and the front two benches can be turned into a bed to lounge on and take in the sights.  There is also a small cabin to store your belongings which would also be the perfect place to let a small person take a nap if needed or to hide from the rain.  Luckily though the sun had his hat on for us and we enjoyed our little cruise down the Ouse laid out in the sun drinking prosecco and eating our picnic.

The boys all took to the challenge of being captains for the day.  In fact they all really got into the role and were taking it very seriously indeed.

We sailed all the way past York city centre before turning around and heading back the other way.  The scenery along the river is absolutely beautiful and there isn’t any point on the route we took that could have been improved.

Luca certainly has his sea legs.  He was confidently wandering around the boat from the minute we got on board, even leaning over the side to see if he could see any fish or mermaids (with me clinging onto his life jacket in case he slipped).

He even had a little go at driving.  In fact we all did.

We hired the boat for the afternoon, from 1-4:30pm and it absolutely flew, for £150 for 8 people it was worth every penny.   The next morning Luca’s first words were “are we going on the boat again today?”  It was so relaxing and a perfect way to spend quality family time together.

We all had the best time and I think we will be using York Marina boat hire again very soon but maybe for a full day next time, or even the weekend.

Ah would you believe me if I said, despite living in Malton and working in York for years and years, we’ve never done this!! I really ought to, the boys would love it! Could be a good way to break them in before we go whale watching in Whitby?!

Oh you should, it’s completely different by river. And yes if you have enough people to split the cost it is a great day of fun.

Looks like a great day and all the better for being in good company. We have done the same down here around the estuary at Fowey, it is great fun and a lovely way to explore by sea. I love your tip of a toilet trip before you set off, I always want to go on a boat, just because I can’t!

    Thanks for sharing on #CountryKids

What an amazing afternoon this looks! I am from York and have been along and on the river Ouse many many times (my school was even along it so I spent many an afternoon doing cross country runs along it). The scenery is stunning and your photos have captured it so well! I have never been on a private boat like this though – what a lovely idea for a special occasion! #countrykids

It was so much fun. Your very lucky coming from such a beautiful place. We visit York a lot but never been down the river like this. It was brilliant.
